Our Ripple: Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement (JA) is a nonprofit organization that aims to educate and inspire young people to succeed in a global economy. Like many times this past year, two of our gals were happy to go to Hempfield High School in Lancaster County and help with their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) unit. It’s an important part of their educational programs for several reasons:

  1. Fosters interest in STEM fields: The STEM unit introduces students to the fascinating world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It can spark and cultivate their interest in these fields, which are critical for innovation and economic growth.
  2. Addresses the STEM skills gap: Many states face a shortage of skilled workers in STEM-related fields. JA’s STEM summit helps bridge this gap by equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed for STEM careers, contributing to a more competitive workforce.
  3. Promotes problem-solving and critical thinking: STEM education encourages students to think critically and solve complex problems. These skills are valuable not only in STEM careers but also in many other aspects of life.
  4. Enhances career readiness: By introducing students to STEM concepts and career opportunities at a young age, the STEM unit helps prepare them for future careers in STEM fields. It can also help students understand the practical applications of STEM knowledge in various industries.
  5. Encourages entrepreneurship: Junior Achievement programs often incorporate entrepreneurial concepts and skills into their curriculum. The STEM unit can inspire students to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems, potentially leading to entrepreneurial ventures in STEM-related areas.
  6. Increases diversity in STEM: Promoting STEM education among underrepresented groups, such as women and minority students, is essential for creating a more inclusive and diverse STEM workforce. Junior Achievement’s STEM unit can play a role in reducing disparities in STEM participation.
  7. Connects classroom learning to the real world: JA programs, including the STEM unit, often involve volunteers from the business community who share their real-world experiences and insights. This helps students understand how their classroom learning applies to the professional world, making education more relevant and engaging.
  8. Encourages lifelong learning: STEM fields are constantly evolving, and the ability to adapt and learn new skills is crucial. Junior Achievement’s STEM unit instills a sense of curiosity and a passion for learning, which can serve students well throughout their lives.

The Junior Achievement STEM Summit is important for inspiring young people to explore STEM fields, preparing them for STEM careers, and addressing the skills gap in these critical areas. It also contributes to the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills, encourages entrepreneurship, and promotes diversity and inclusion in STEM. By connecting education to the real world and fostering a love for learning, JA’s STEM unit helps equip students for a brighter future and we are happy to be an engaging aspect of their educational program. #waltonproud #juniorachievement #JAStemSummit #STEM
