Virtual Design Technician

Job Description:

Utilizing a Design/Build approach to the installation of mechanical systems, Walton’s staff of Professional Engineers, Mechanical Designers, and Virtual Design Technicians will work with  HVAC, Plumbing, and Process Piping projects ensuring a complete design along with proper coordination in the field with Walton’s Construction Services Group. Changes to the scope will be accomplished seamlessly “in-house” eliminating schedule delays and impact costs. Licensed in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia, Walton can also provide computerized energy usage calculations and return on investment (ROI) analysis, green and alternative energy designs and LEED certification, internet-based DDC automatic temperature control systems, and AutoCAD drawings that will assist in the coordination of other trades work including electrical and fire protection.

Department Information:

Walton and Company’s Virtual Design Group is responsible for taking designs and collaborating with in-house engineers and mechanical designers to get a project ready for a permit as well as coordinate with other trades and develop a plan for construction.  During this process, the Virtual Design Technician will draw systems in 3D software, coordinate, and then be able to assist project managers with takeoff and buy out.  Other projects include plan/spec coordination drawings.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for HVAC and plumbing projects for design-build projects, coordination drawings, and sketches.
  • Responsible for coordination for plan/spec projects.
  • Draw 3D equipment models per submittal information.
  • Responsible for assisting mechanical engineers, designers, and project managers.
  • Visit jobs for as-built and existing condition surveys.
  • Use BIM software to coordinate, run clash reports, and solutions.
  • Attend job meetings and be able to virtually coordinate with other trades.


  • Associates degree or completion of a technical trade program in AutoCAD, drafting, or related field, plus related work experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Must be proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
  • Revit and Navisworks a plus.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing and pipe systems and/or HVAC systems a plus.
